Frequently Asked Questions About Belly Dance Performances
I want to hire you to perform at an event I'm organizing--what sort of events do you do?
I perform at (family friendly) parties, restaurants, weddings, nightclubs and hen nights, as well as corporate, cultural, community, and select charity events.
Is there any event you will not perform at?
I do not perform at stag nights or any event in which there is an all-male audience or I feel my personal safety is at risk.
Is it okay for children to be there?
Of course! All of my performances are family-friendly, and children usually love the sparkly costumes and fun music that accompany my dancing.
I want you to embarrass the guest of honor at my event--will you sit on his/her lap or ''shake it'' in his/her face?
Sorry, but I think you may have belly dancing confused with stripping or exotic dancing! My performances are always tasteful and family-friendly and I do not consider actions that are demeaning or disrespectful to be a part of belly dance.
How long is a show?
My standard performance will last about 15-20 minutes (3-5 songs). If you are interested in hiring me for a longer set or if you'd like to have me perform several shorter sets throughout the event, this can be arranged at a slightly higher price. Please contact me to discuss the details.
Who provides the music?
I will bring my music on a burned CD and you will need to provide the sound system. I can also bring my iPod if that works better for you. Please let me know if your sound system does not accept burned CDs.
What sort of sound system do you require?
Generally, a high-quality cd player with good speakers is best. I burn my dance sets onto cd but I can also bring my iPod if that's easier for you. For a belly dance performance louder music is better, so please be sure that your sound system can handle loud volumes without distortion.
What kind of music do you use?
I typically use Arabic dance music and this can range from Classical to Modern to Pop styles. I can also use Turkish music or take special requests!
What sort of costumes do you wear?
My costumes are all tasteful, lavishly decorated, and professionally made by designers from Egypt and Turkey. I tend to wear the typical belly dance costume of bra and belt (called 'bedleh' in Arabic) with a full skirt and lots of sparkly accessories, but I can arrange to wear a dance dress if you are planning a more conservative event. For a sample of my costumes, past and present, please visit my Photo Gallery.
What kinds of props do you use?
For a typical belly dance performance I may use my zills (finger cymbals) and a long, flowing dance veil. Upon special request, I can also use a cane, sword, melaya, balancing tray with candles, Isis Wings, or fan veils.
What if I need to hire more than one belly dancer for my event?
You're in luck! I can help you to arrange performances by several talented and professional solo dancers, or a group performance if you prefer. Please contact me to discuss this.
Can I take pictures or videotape your dancing?
You are welcome to take pictures, but please obtain my written permission before you videotape my performance (this includes on your mobile).
Is tipping appropriate?
Yes, and much appreciated (but never expected)! Unless the host specifies otherwise, the guests are welcome to tip me by tucking bills into my belt (NOT down the front of my bra) or throwing money over my head in a ''money shower''.
What do you charge?
My fees for a standard performance in the London area start at £175.00.
How should I pay you for an event?
If you wish to hire me for your next event, please contact me directly or via the hipsinc Agency (www.hipsinc.com). In most cases I require a non-refundable deposit by cheque and the balance can be paid by cash or cheque the night of your event.
Will you travel out-of-town or internationally?
Absolutely! I am based in South London (UK) and with advance notice and extra compensation for my journey and accomodations, I am willing to travel for an event. I have taught and performed in the US, Belgium, Canada and England and I absolutely love to travel!
How far in advance do I need to book you?
The sooner, the better! I travel quite a bit and as a full-time professional dancer, my schedule tends to book up quickly.
Will you provide me with a contract?
Absolutely! Once we have confirmed the details of your event, hipsinc or myself will send you a contract to secure the performance date. You will need to return a copy to the appropriate party, signed, with your deposit fee.
Do you have any sample clips of your performances?
Yes, I do! Please visit my Video Gallery, or you're welcome to check out my Upcoming Events and come to one of my shows.
